Hello all,

Im new to this site, have heard about it and currently been following it.  I am currently considering running the Belfast Marathon.

I currently have been training since November 17th, albeit for Gaelic season.  I try to run at least once a week with a cycle on stationary bike once too for 15 mins.  I have been running around 3.25 mile in 26mins.  I have never run furrther than this, but feel I can.  The majority of my work is weight and core based.

Would the marathon be too much of a step up for me?  Do I have enough time to train for it?

Any tips appreciate as well.  Thanks  Smiley

Hi PC, if you are thinking of Belfast you do have time to train!

Check out the likes of Runners World online for marathon training programmes.  Even just popping marathon training schedules into a search engine will return a load of ideas.

The main thing is to increase your mileage slowly so you avoid injury.  You probably have a good base level of fitness but long distance running is a very different kettle of fish!

If you can come along to the Weds night runs - all the info is on the website - and you will find your mileage creeping up.  For marathon training you need miles under the belt - they dont have to be fast - you need to train your body to cope with the duress before you start sprinting!  Learn to run before you race!

Hope that helps a bit - also, search through all the old threads, you'll find a lot of useful info and ideas.  Good luck!

Hi I started marathon training 5 weeks ago to shift some weight.  Have went from 16 stones to 14 and a half so must be doing something right.

Thanks Barb, I am slowly getting there.  I have started to see the benefits of a high carbo diet.

Hi, just checking that it's okay to join you guys this wednesday night?  I've been running on and off for years now, (not particularly quick - average 9 minute miles) and am finding it hard to keep motivating myself!  Would there be a group of plodders that i could keep up with???

thanks, em
